An exceptional educator has the power to inspire profound change. At Pratt, evolving into such a teacher involves your own transformation—both as a creative professional and as an educator. Every first-year student engages with the Foundation program's essential coursework, complemented by mandatory art history and liberal arts classes, while initiating their art and design education studies in their second year. The BFA in Art and Design Education offers two specialized tracks: one leading to New York State teaching certification and another focused on community-based art and design education. Both pathways incorporate hands-on fieldwork and teaching experiences in K-12 schools and alternative learning environments. By junior year, students commit to their preferred specialization—those selecting certification complete further teaching hours in public schools, while community-focused students fulfill requirements in neighborhood settings. A culminating capstone course enables seniors to synthesize their artistic practice with teaching insights through scholarly research, culminating in a final exhibition that showcases their educational journey in art and design pedagogy.
