The Department of Psychology and Counseling provides a Master of Science Degree specializing in School Counseling. This program equips students for professional roles as school counselors in Pre K-12 educational environments. Prospective students are advised to earn an undergraduate degree in education before applying. Although Kansas no longer mandates two years of teaching experience for school counseling positions, it remains beneficial. Applicants lacking an education background or teaching experience must fulfill extra academic requirements. Along with the 48-credit School Counseling curriculum, candidates must achieve a passing score on the PRAXIS II exam for Professional School Counselors.
Admission requires a bachelor's degree with a grade-point average of at least a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.
The minimum score levels required for various degree programs at Pittsburg State University range from:
TOEFL: 520/68 to 550/79
IELTS: 6.0 to 6.5
PTE: 47 to 53
