Pittsburg State University's Family and Consumer Sciences program offers students four specialization tracks: Community and Family Services, Early Childhood Development, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Nutrition and Wellness. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department tackles contemporary and future challenges in areas like child development, consumer education, family dynamics, housing design, retail merchandising, and nutrition for healthy lifestyles. Additionally, the department's curriculum helps students cultivate essential professional and life skills for success in both personal and career settings. Every Family and Consumer Sciences program shares a unifying purpose: enhancing the social, physical, and economic welfare of individuals and families across local and global communities. These programs concentrate on core human needs - including nourishment, housing, apparel, interpersonal connections, economic participation, and family systems.
This degree prepares graduates for various family and consumer science careers requiring specialized knowledge. Students can focus on child development, community services, education, or nutrition. The curriculum includes 14 credit hours of foundational courses plus additional requirements for the selected specialization. Earning a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences requires completing at least 120 credit hours, including a minor from another academic department.
