Discover Berkeley City College's renowned American Sign Language Program, a pioneer in ASL education and curriculum design. Our program serves as a model for institutions across the United States, Canada, the UK, and beyond, with many adopting our innovative teaching approach.
ASL has grown increasingly popular as a foreign language option in California's educational institutions. Organizations in both public and private sectors seek bilingual staff to comply with ADA requirements, creating demand for ASL-proficient employees in workplaces serving Deaf individuals.
Our comprehensive ASL Program equips students with both language proficiency and cultural understanding for effective communication within the Deaf community. Recognized as the fourth most common language in the U.S., ASL serves as the primary communication method for many Deaf Americans.
This program benefits diverse learners, including: students enhancing their majors (such as interpreting or education), those fulfilling language requirements, parents of Deaf children, and Deaf adults. Participants gain valuable skills that increase employability in Deaf-interactive environments.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates will achieve the following competencies:
Develop expressive and receptive ASL skills
Gain understanding of Deaf culture, history, and traditions
Learn appropriate cultural conduct for Deaf community gatherings and events
