The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at Penn State provides graduate programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish, featuring concentrations in Spanish Peninsular literature (spanning Medieval to Modern periods), Latin American literature (from Colonial to Contemporary), and Hispanic linguistics. Qualified candidates may apply for teaching assistantships. M.A. students typically receive four semesters of funding, while Ph.D. candidates are generally ensured eight semesters of support post-M.A., subject to maintaining strong teaching performance and academic standing. Limited fellowship opportunities are also offered.
The minimum requirement for admission normally will be the equivalent of an undergraduate Spanish major.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
