The Master of Arts in Music program provides three specialized pathways: Musicology, Music Theory, or a combined Music Theory and History track. Each curriculum balances comprehensive knowledge with focused study, incorporating courses that refine research, teaching, analytical, and writing abilities while equipping students for diverse careers or advanced doctoral work. At Penn State, you'll collaborate with distinguished scholars whose expertise is renowned throughout the University, nationally, and internationally. The Musicology concentration (32 credits) fosters extensive understanding of musical periods while nurturing specialized expertise. The Music Theory pathway (32 credits) trains students in contemporary research methods and analytical techniques from a theoretical standpoint. The combined Music Theory and History option (34 credits) merges theoretical, analytical, and historical perspectives on musical styles and compositions. All tracks feature specialized courses and electives, enabling deeper exploration of specific interests or complementary disciplines. Completion of a thesis is mandatory for degree conferral.
