The English B.A./M.A. Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate Program (ENGL IUG) is a five-year initiative tailored for exceptional, driven students aiming to substantially enhance their writing abilities. This combined degree pathway enables outstanding Penn State English undergraduates to earn both their bachelor's and master's degrees in English within five years. The initial two years focus on fulfilling University General Education and Liberal Arts prerequisites alongside foundational English coursework. Students generally apply for the B.A./M.A. track in their junior year, commencing graduate studies during their fourth year. The third year involves advanced English studies in literature, rhetoric, or creative writing. During the fourth year, participants complete the English major's capstone course, ENGL 487W, while taking only 400-level and graduate creative writing classes. The program's final year is dedicated entirely to graduate seminars, concluding with a master's paper showcasing the student's finest creative work (either poetry or prose) accompanied by academic research.
The majority of Penn State’s applications come from traditional, first-year students. The following types of students are considered first-year applicants (or freshman applicants, as some refer to them): Current high school student in his or her senior year; Student who has earned a high school diploma or a GED and has no post-secondary coursework; Student who has attempted 17 or fewer credits (semester hours) of college coursework at a regionally accredited college/university before attending Penn State; Current high school student who may have enrolled in another institution(s) before graduating from high school (dual enrollment); Student who may have attended Penn State on a nondegree basis.
