Penn State's Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management provides a Ph.D. program designed for students holding a master's degree in RPTM, taking your academic and professional prospects to new heights. Expanding upon the comprehensive scholarship and research foundation of the M.S. program, the Ph.D. curriculum enhances your expertise in specialized areas, research methodologies, leisure studies, and interdisciplinary concepts. During your doctoral studies, you'll gain access to exceptional collaborative research projects, theoretical explorations, and practical applications focused on leisure and recreation across personal, societal, and intercultural contexts, with specialized focus areas including: Recreation and tourism administration and promotion Commercial leisure and travel industries Recreational therapy Nature-based recreation and conservation management Community leisure programs Fundamental leisure studies.
For admission to the graduate program, a bachelor's or master's degree is required. Applicants from majors other than recreation and parks are welcome to apply; however, additional course work is required. Students with a 3.00 junior/senior average (on a 4.00 scale) and with appropriate course backgrounds will be considered for admission.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
