The Ph.D. program has no fixed course prerequisites aside from colloquium participation. Individual doctoral committees determine specific coursework needs, with most programs requiring 30+ credits beyond a master's degree. Graduate School candidacy exam policies mandate: Exams must occur within three academic semesters of starting the doctoral program (excluding summer terms). Candidates must maintain active enrollment (full or part-time) during their exam semester. English proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking must be demonstrated. Early completion of qualifying exams is highly recommended, with administrations occurring each fall and spring. The Graduate Programs Office communicates exact dates via email. The qualifying assessment comprises three thematic sections, each featuring both written and oral components. Students choose their three focus areas from: Solid Mechanics, Rigid Body Mechanics, System Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Engineering Analysis Fundamentals, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer.
It is expected that students have a Bachelor of Science degree in a suitable engineering field from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or from an officially recognized degree-granting international institution.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
