The History Department at Penn State provides a selective, specialized PhD program tailored to equip students for professional paths both within and beyond academic settings. Our program accepts candidates in five core disciplines that align with faculty expertise: 1) United States, 2) Latin America, 3) Early Modern Global, 4) East Asia, and 5) Middle East. By maintaining small cohorts in these focus areas, we concentrate our resources on developing versatile career-ready scholars. Beyond core field seminars, graduate students can explore thematic concentrations including: 1) Environment, Science, and Technology, 2) Gender Studies, 3) Transnational History, 4) Race and Ethnicity, 5) Modern Global Studies, and 6) Colonialism and Nationalism.
Once admitted, students become part of a vibrant scholarly community dedicated to outstanding research and pedagogy. They collaborate closely with distinguished faculty, fellow graduate researchers, and undergraduate students. Our program features intimate seminar settings, guaranteed funding opportunities, personalized faculty guidance, exceptional library resources, career development workshops, and possibilities for cross-disciplinary study.
Applicants to the doctoral program must hold or be near completion of the master's degree (or its equivalent); all others will be considered for admission to the master's program, even if it is their ultimate intention to pursue a doctoral degree at Penn State.
