Penn State's Comparative Literature graduate program features an exclusive 5-year Ph.D. track. Admission requires an M.A. in Comparative Literature or similar disciplines, whether obtained at Penn State or elsewhere. Candidates with relevant master's degrees may qualify for the accelerated Ph.D. pathway. This intensive program demands 33 credits total, structured around coursework, candidacy exams, language proficiency verification, comprehensive testing, and culminating with dissertation completion - following this specific sequence.
Most students who do graduate work in comparative literature hold a B.A. or M.A. degree in comparative literature or in a particular language and literature. Students completing degrees in such fields are welcome to apply --as are students in other humanistic fields, such as philosophy or history, if they have studied literature.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
