The Penn State Civil and Environmental Engineering Department provides several advanced degree choices: Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Below you'll find brief overviews of each program. Students in our civil and environmental engineering graduate programs become part of a diverse community of over 150 current students, visiting researchers, and international scholars who benefit from our distinguished faculty and top-tier resources. For instance, our Civil Infrastructure Testing and Evaluation Laboratory (CITEL) features cutting-edge testing and computational equipment. Occupying a 56,000-square-foot space, CITEL conducts research on global civil infrastructure challenges. The Kappe Environmental Engineering Laboratories span about 16,000 square feet, which includes a specialized 2,000 square foot facility at the University Wastewater Treatment Plant and a Water Quality Lab dedicated to research project analyses.
Candidates should possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. Students in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics with a 3.00 grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale) may be considered for admission. Exceptions to the minimum 3.00 grade-point average may be made for students with special backgrounds, abilities, and interests.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
