Data Science is an interdisciplinary domain focused on creating, implementing, and verifying techniques, procedures, frameworks, and instruments to extract meaningful knowledge, defensible conclusions, and practical insights from vast, intricate, and varied datasets through analysis, forecasting, and reasoning. It combines elements of Computer Science, Informatics, and Statistics to produce robust methodologies, technologies, and standards applicable across diverse fields. The major's curriculum aims to provide students with the expertise and competencies required to identify, define, and address data-related challenges using contemporary approaches for data handling, investigation, merging, predictive analytics (leveraging machine learning), and effectively conveying results to diverse stakeholders. Students will develop the evaluative abilities necessary to gauge the viability, advantages, efficacy, constraints, risks, and ethical considerations of employing data science techniques in various contexts. Hands-on initiatives like capstone projects enable students to collaborate efficiently in multidisciplinary teams, unlocking data's potential to drive discoveries, enhance products and processes, and guide decision-making. Unlike programs primarily centered on applying data science to other disciplines, this major emphasizes the advancement, assessment, utilization, and verification of data science methodologies. All students undergo comprehensive training via core coursework, with additional specialization options in applied, computational, or statistical modeling tracks, as outlined below.
