The Art program is a cross-disciplinary course of study that helps students explore their creative vision while connecting it to broader historical and cultural frameworks. Introductory 100-level courses focus on building essential visual literacy skills, while 200-499 level classes provide advanced instruction in art history, painting, printmaking, photography, digital media, sculpture, experimental art forms, and drawing.
Oregon State University's photography and digital media program fosters innovative, team-based learning with an emphasis on personal artistic growth. The curriculum covers both classic darkroom processes and cutting-edge digital photography methods, including digital printing, exhibition design, studio lighting, and video art. Students work in fully-equipped facilities featuring modern computer labs with industry-standard software, large-format printers, a traditional darkroom, and professional lighting studios.
Committed to diversity and inclusion, our program inspires students to engage with pressing societal issues like environmental concerns, identity exploration, social justice, and other contemporary challenges. We empower students to combine technical proficiency with artistic vision, helping them craft a unique visual style while considering the historical, theoretical, and ethical dimensions of their work. The program promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, connecting photography with film, sound art, interactive media, social platforms, book arts, installations, design disciplines, and other academic departments. By cultivating adaptability and intellectual curiosity about photography's ever-changing landscape, students develop analytical skills valuable across creative fields.
The BFA program's main goal is to deliver comprehensive visual arts training at the undergraduate level, preparing graduates for professional studio practice and careers throughout the creative sector.
