Loyola's PhD program stands as a leading center for advanced studies in continental philosophy, political and social philosophy, and philosophical history. The program is particularly distinguished for its expertise in feminist theory, ethics and value studies, critical race philosophy, and bioethical inquiry. Our department embraces philosophical diversity, with faculty drawing from multiple intellectual traditions and methodological approaches, ensuring students encounter both analytic and continental perspectives throughout their studies. This provides doctoral candidates with an exceptionally comprehensive education and numerous potential research directions. Prospective PhD applicants must hold a BA degree or equivalent from an accredited university, with substantial philosophical training - typically an undergraduate major - including studies in ancient and early modern European philosophy, along with metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, and socio-political philosophy. The Moral Philosophy curriculum encompasses extensive areas of inquiry, spanning normative ethics, metaethics, moral epistemology, political philosophy, legal philosophy, and ethical history. Sample Moral Philosophy courses feature: Ethical Traditions, Aristotelian Ethics, Thomistic Ethics, Kant's Second Critique, Utilitarian Thought with Mill, and Reason in Ethics.

Qualification Requirements

Entering PhD students must have a Bachelor of Arts degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. They should have a solid background in philosophy, ordinarily an undergraduate major, including coursework in the history of ancient and early modern European philosophy as well as in metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, and social-political philosophy. An applicant for admission must ordinarily hold (or receive prior to matriculation) a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. In addition, because academic qualifications are of major importance, the applicant ordinarily must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If you have non-U.S. educational credentials, you are required to submit your official education credentials (e.g., transcripts, mark sheets, degree certificates, graduation diplomas) and evaluation fee directly to any NACES member companies.

For the TOEFL, a minimum score of 79 on the iBT or a 550 on the written test is required.
