This program qualifies graduates for teacher licensure in Virginia. Designed for English educators, it equips students to teach various secondary school subjects. Accredited by the State of Virginia, the program also benefits from reciprocity agreements with thirty other states, facilitating licensure if students relocate. The curriculum integrates standard major and minor requirements. Participants enroll in English (ENGL) courses through the College of Arts and Letters, alongside education courses in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies. Upon completion, students earn a Bachelor of Arts in English. Our alumni have earned distinction for their teaching excellence throughout Hampton Roads schools.

Admission to all levels of University study is contingent upon successful completion of English language proficiency requirements. Non-native speakers of English can provide evidence of English language proficiency through a variety of options. Admission to the on-campus English Language Center (ELC) and subsequent enrollment in English language courses at the ELC does not imply admission to the University.
