The Applied Language Studies (APLS) specialization centers on the systematic examination of language, highlighting how linguistic principles can solve practical challenges. Within the APLS program, students master the fundamental structural elements common to all languages. Those pursuing ODU's B.A. or Minor in English with an APLS focus analyze language's societal impact by studying its real-world applications. APLS also enables students to explore native language development and additional language acquisition, diverse social/regional/global language variations, discourse and conversational patterns, linguistic gender dynamics, English's historical evolution, and intercultural communication contrasts.
