Marriage and family therapy is a specialized area of psychotherapy centered on addressing challenges in interpersonal relationships. The master's program equips students to take the national licensing examination and seek licensure in Oklahoma and numerous other states, or to continue their education with doctoral studies after completing the degree. Oklahoma State University provides the sole COAMFTE-accredited program in Oklahoma, recognized by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education.

Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to demonstrate an acceptable level of spoken English usually by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score. TOEFL score of 79 (internet based test) 550 (paper based test) is required. Alternatively, an official IELTS, academic stream, examination with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 will satisfy the English proficiency requirements for admission to a graduate program.
