The Rhetoric and Writing Studies program equips students and educators to become thoughtful, involved citizens in today's democratic society. We critically examine how texts are created across various mediums - from public to private spheres, print to digital formats, and conventional to multimedia compositions. Our program emphasizes pedagogical methods that cultivate rhetorical awareness, supporting principled democratic discourse and action. Students and instructors develop their rhetorical skills through our curriculum, instruction, and career growth opportunities, enabling them to:
Skillfully evaluate, interpret, and assess the reliability of information across diverse formats, media channels, and styles.
Utilize their writing expertise in multiple contexts, spanning academic, professional, personal, and civic environments.
Create compositions that demonstrate rhetorical awareness and effectiveness, considering factors like readership, objectives, context, and timeliness.

Have an undergraduate degree in English or related field with at least 24 credit hours in English beyond firstyear composition
Demonstrate a background in some technical area through work experience andor coursework
TESOL applicants must also
Have six credit hours of coursework in a language other than English with grades of B or better
Applicants who do not meet this requirement must complete two semesters of language work receiving grades of B or better prior to taking the qualifying exams Nonnative speakers of English are exempt from this requirement
Teacher Certification Disclaimer The certificate in TESOL does not carry with it certification for public school employment Students seeking such certification must meet special state and university requirements
