American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual communication system with its own distinct grammatical rules and structure. ASL incorporates body language, facial cues, hand configurations, sign movements, and positioning. Ranking as the third most common language in the U.S., ASL education includes cultural studies of the Deaf community through classroom instruction and real-world experiences in Stillwater and across Oklahoma.
Key Features
The ASL program offers both an interpreting specialization and a standard Bachelor of Arts track. Coursework covers Deaf cultural studies, ASL poetry, ASL narrative techniques, interpreting ethics, and practical training in OSU's Language Lab. Program participants receive complimentary access to the Mango app for ASL practice and can join the university's American Sign Language Club.
