Founded in October 1969 as Black Studies during the civil rights era, this academic unit became an official department in 1972. Currently recognized as one of the nation's premier programs in this field, the department has temporarily paused graduate admissions for Autumn 2020. Prospective students should inquire about Autumn 2021 enrollment opportunities starting August 2020.
