The Department of Statistics provides multiple graduate degree options, such as MS and PhD programs in Statistics along with a Master of Applied Statistics (MAS). In collaboration with the College of Public Health's Division of Biostatistics, it oversees a distinctive Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Biostatistics. The department strives to advance diverse aspects of statistical science, from pioneering new theoretical frameworks to creating innovative methodologies. Key strengths encompass Bayesian analysis, spatio-temporal modeling, statistical machine learning, and biostatistical applications. Investigations focus on contemporary and evolving research domains. Many faculty and students engage in cross-disciplinary projects, producing impactful scientific work that extends beyond traditional statistics. Faculty consistently obtain prestigious grants from organizations like the NSF and NIH. Furthermore, the department co-manages Ohio State's NSF-supported Mathematical Biosciences Institute. The MAS program specifically trains students for applied statistical roles in corporate, industrial, and public sectors, typically as a two-year program concluding with a comprehensive final assessment.
