Our physics graduate program is structured to provide a strong foundation in core principles, exposure to cutting-edge research areas, and opportunities for specialized study. Collaborating with your faculty advisor, you'll customize your academic path based on your objectives and prior undergraduate experience. PhD candidates typically focus on coursework during their initial two years, deepening their theoretical physics knowledge and exploring contemporary research topics. Following your first year, we recommend engaging with one of our department's active research projects during the summer. From year three onward, your primary focus shifts to conducting original research for your doctoral dissertation under faculty guidance, culminating in your thesis defense around years five or six. The Ohio State University's Physics Department stands among the institution's most expansive and varied academic units. As part of the Natural and Mathematical Sciences division within the College of Arts and Sciences, our department operates from the modern Physics Research Building while maintaining teaching and advising facilities in Smith Laboratory, our former headquarters.
A baccalaureate or professional degree (or equivalent foreign credential) from an accredited college or university, earned by the expected date of entry into your graduate program. A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in all prior undergraduate and graduate work.
