The doctoral program in oral biology brings together faculty from three health sciences colleges (dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine) along with the Comprehensive Cancer Center, featuring twenty-nine interdisciplinary faculty members. This program emphasizes hands-on laboratory training in research methodologies. Participants acquire skills in hypothesis formulation, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and scientific communication. The curriculum provides foundational knowledge of both contemporary and fundamental scientific concepts relevant to dental and craniofacial sciences. Students learn to identify and investigate important research questions through modern scientific techniques. The College of Dentistry provides focused research opportunities in neurobiology as it pertains to oral functions. Faculty expertise spans areas including taste and pain perception, developmental aspects of oral motor control, craniofacial muscle specialization, central nervous system patterning, and neuroimmune interactions.
