The Linguistics Department's graduate program emphasizes theoretical research, focusing on advancing universal theories of human language while exploring specific aspects of language structure, evolution, and diversity. Our approach at Ohio State treats linguistics as a fundamental science rather than an applied discipline - we investigate linguistic phenomena primarily to understand human cognition, not for immediate practical uses like language teaching. Laboratory-based studies in speech production, perception, and sentence comprehension processes play a significant role across our research areas. Computational linguistics represents an increasingly important specialization within our department. Our PhD curriculum offers comprehensive linguistic training while allowing for deep specialization. Students typically concentrate on specific research areas, often incorporating interdisciplinary work in psychology, computer science, philosophy, or particular language studies through customized degree plans developed with faculty advisors.
