The Health and Exercise Science program at The Ohio State University offers a comprehensive curriculum that expands students' knowledge base while strengthening their foundational and applied research abilities in both lab and field settings. Studies in this discipline explore the structural, functional, psychological, and behavioral effects of regular physical activity and exercise. Ohio State's Health and Exercise Science program takes either a physiological or behavioral approach to the field. The exercise physiology concentration equips students to evaluate current research critically, formulate hypotheses, create experimental studies, employ proper measurement methods, and use suitable statistical analyses concerning exercise physiology. Key topics addressed include: a.) exercise evaluation, b.) changes in skeletal muscle properties and metabolism with aging, c.) creating and implementing exercise regimens, and d.) managing and preventing chronic lifestyle and degenerative conditions. For the health and physical activity behavior track, students learn to use behavioral science concepts to understand factors influencing physical activity participation across diverse groups and environments. This track provides training in developing, executing, and assessing initiatives to encourage healthier lifestyles and activity patterns. Additionally, students acquire expertise in applying behavioral science methods to investigate exercise participation and adherence.
