Our graduate curriculum is built upon a strong foundation in essential languages: Ancient Greek, Latin, or Modern Greek, depending on each student's specialization, along with reading proficiency in relevant modern languages including French, German, and Italian. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of the literature and history pertaining to their chosen cultural focus areas. While these form the core requirements, individual academic journeys vary significantly. The diverse faculty at Ohio State cover wide-ranging research interests across more than two thousand years, offering specialized study in: archaeology, art history, Byzantine and medieval studies, critical theory, cultural politics, epigraphy, mythology and religion, Near Eastern civilizations, palaeography, philosophy, reception studies, and more. Qualifying examinations are customized to align with each student's selected areas of specialization. For instance, those focusing on ancient Mediterranean religions can pursue an Interdisciplinary Graduate Specialization in Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean, earning a completion certificate to complement their degree.
