Geography explores the spatial distribution of phenomena, examining patterns and movements across both natural and human landscapes. Human geographers analyze the spatial organization of human endeavors, including economic systems, political structures, and cultural practices. Physical geographers investigate natural processes and their geographic manifestations, particularly weather and climate systems. Ohio State offers four specialized tracks: The Environment and Society (E&S) concentration delves into the interconnected dynamics between human societies and natural systems, exploring how factors like land-use policies, socioeconomic disparities, and governance influence ecological systems. Urban, Regional and Global Studies (URGS) investigates diverse social, economic, and political forces operating at multiple scales, from local communities to worldwide networks, including global economic integration, technological advancements, population movements, and sociopolitical struggles related to identity and inequality. Climate and Physical Geography (CPG) students examine Earth-atmosphere interactions across different scales, studying phenomena like Pacific Ocean events (El Niño/La Niña) that alter global weather patterns, including jet stream positions and Atlantic hurricane frequency. The Spatial Analysis (SA) specialization equips students with essential GIS and spatial modeling competencies applicable across numerous fields, from disaster response and commercial site selection to transportation planning, public health surveillance, and environmental resource management.
