The Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MRS) program offers a comprehensive exploration of the medieval and early modern periods, covering late antiquity through the mid-1600s across Europe and global cultures. Designed to accommodate diverse student interests, it focuses on historical traditions while encouraging contemplation of how these eras influence our rapidly evolving modern world. This major serves as strong preparation for graduate humanities programs while delivering a rich, versatile education for students passionate about history, culture, and the arts in their fullest expression. Ohio State's Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS), among the university's most established centers and one of few offering its own curriculum, oversees the MRS program. CMRS fosters interdisciplinary research that transcends conventional historical and geographic limits. The medieval and Renaissance studies curriculum reveals insights into European, Mediterranean, Near Eastern, and Asian history, literature, arts, philosophies, and religions. Students can easily engage with the center's vibrant intellectual community beyond classes: CMRS organizes an annual lecture series, film screenings, a two-day Popular Culture and the Deep Past conference/festival, plus essay contests and travel grant competitions.
