The Oakland University Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) equips aspiring educators to become teacher-leaders in modern classrooms. This program develops skilled, thoughtful practitioners equipped with the expertise and abilities to guide adolescents toward intellectual, social, and ethical growth in our fast-evolving, culturally diverse society.
Students who enrolled at Oakland University in summer 2023 or earlier qualify for the traditional undergraduate STEP pathway. This includes a fifth-year field experience culminating in eligibility for Michigan's secondary teaching certification, which authorizes instruction in content majors and minors for grades 6-12. Certification options include: English, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, history, K-12 world languages (French, German, Japanese, or Spanish), K-12 music education, and K-12 visual arts education. Participants may additionally pursue integrated science or social studies endorsements.
