The Music Department provides a thorough musical education for both undergraduate and graduate students. Collaborating with faculty who have national and international recognition fosters a dynamic environment for artistic and academic development. Students benefit from peer learning as well, building a nurturing musical network. Beyond teaching, performing, and conducting research, OU faculty guide students in career preparation and advanced studies across various music disciplines. Oakland University's Music Department holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Enrollment in OU's music degree programs (excluding the B.A. in Music) involves a dual-stage admission process. All applicants must first complete an entrance audition, scheduled multiple times annually, to qualify for any music degree program. For Bachelor of Music (B.M.) candidates, the second requirement is the major standing audition, evaluating whether students may progress in their studies and qualify for specialized programs within the school.
