Northwestern's School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) Teacher Education programs focus on cultivating learning and teaching approaches that enable every student to succeed. Our framework is built on four core principles: Promoting Equity and Social Justice, Encouraging Subject Matter Understanding, Exploring Learning and Human Development, and Connecting Within and Beyond Communities. Given today's challenges, we aim to prepare educators capable of shaping new social and cultural environments, particularly for those historically marginalized by educational systems. Program participants will deepen their awareness of both personal and systemic factors to drive collective progress.
With intentionally limited enrollment, our program fosters intimate, engaging classes that strengthen bonds among students, faculty, and peer groups. Through rigorous academic study paired with immersive fieldwork, participants gain insight into how responsive teaching practices intersect with educational theory. The program concludes with a capstone project integrating hands-on experience, research initiatives, and theoretical frameworks - equipping future educators to leverage data and scholarship for meaningful educational transformation.
The GRE and GPA are important indicators of an applicant's academic capabilities. When reviewing an application, we are looking for candidates who:
have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4-point scale),
score in the mid-150s on the GRE Verbal and Quantitative sections (on a 170-point scale), and
score 4.0 or better on the GRE Analytical Writing section (on a 6-point scale).
Additionally, a competitive TOEFL score (100 or higher on the iBT) can help to mitigate a lower than average score on the verbal section of the GRE.
