The International Human Rights LLM Program (IHR LLM) offers comprehensive training in international human rights and criminal law frameworks. A defining characteristic of this program is the tight-knit community formed annually among globally diverse IHR LLM students, each bringing unique perspectives from their human rights advocacy work across different nations.
With intentionally limited enrollment, the IHR LLM ensures students receive personalized attention from Northwestern's Center for International Human Rights faculty, all seasoned professionals in the field. Participants gain access to all Center initiatives, with many opting for the hands-on IHR clinic course. This practical component allows collaboration on real-world human rights cases, both domestic and international, sometimes including UN advocacy opportunities in Geneva.
Prospective students must specifically select the IHR LLM option when applying. The program primarily targets legal professionals who have already earned a JD or equivalent law degree in their home jurisdiction.
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
TOEFL or IELTS test scores are required of most international applicants.
