Going beyond just musical history, Northwestern's Musicology Program examines music as a social practice influenced by artistic trends and philosophical ideas – fundamentally, the cultural study of music as a human endeavor.
The program encourages students to analyze music from multiple disciplines, uncovering cultural insights that traditional music notation cannot convey alone. Combining historical musicology with ethnomusicology, it cultivates thoughtful yet analytical scholars who can engage with diverse musical traditions and scholarly approaches, all within a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
