We hold that exceptional theater artists—designers, performers, playwrights, dancers, and directors—blend advanced performance skills with extensive understanding of theatrical literature and theory. You'll explore and train in acting, vocal techniques, movement, dance, directing, design, stagecraft, playwriting, and dramaturgy, complemented by studies in theater history, literature, and critique. You'll cultivate analytical skills to examine scenarios and intricate societal matters from multiple viewpoints, while honing abilities in research, writing, collaborative dialogue, public speaking, performance, and production.
Whether specializing in performance, direction, writing, technical production, or design, you'll find abundant chances to refine your artistry. Up to forty annual productions take place at the Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts' multiple venues, matched by numerous student-led performances throughout campus.
Our distinguished faculty bring diverse expertise spanning theater history, performance and direction, dance, musical theater, creative drama, narrative arts, youth theater, scriptwriting, stage coordination, and costume, scenic, and lighting design. Numerous instructors also maintain professional careers in Chicago's theater scene and beyond.

Northwestern accepts results from both the TOEFL and the IELTS.
There is no minimum score required by Northwestern. Competitive applicants demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and often score in the high range on all four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) of the TOEFL iBT, or receive IELTS band scores in highest three bands on the overall and individual scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
