The Asian Languages and Cultures Major enables students to develop fluency in an Asian language (Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, or Korean) while gaining in-depth knowledge of one or more Asian cultural regions (China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, or comparative studies). Beyond achieving third-level competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing an Asian language, students will develop cultural awareness essential for meaningful engagement and nuanced comprehension of Asian societies. The program's humanities curriculum trains students in critical analysis, interpretation, and scholarly writing through diverse approaches including literary studies, film/media studies, gender studies, and cultural studies. While many majors concentrate on a single language and cultural area, the program also supports comparative studies across regions. Students might examine connections between Korean and Japanese languages and cultures, or investigate colonial and post-colonial histories spanning East and South Asia.
