Students pursuing speech and theatre education earn certification to teach high school levels while also qualifying as play directors and debate/forensics coaches. The program emphasizes developing both teaching methodologies and broad expertise in theatrical arts and communication disciplines. From their first year onward, majors gain practical experience, including directing a full production before completing their degree. To support academic and professional success, the department pairs incoming students with experienced mentors who guide them in managing coursework and extracurricular commitments. Field experience begins immediately, with education majors entering classrooms as early as their freshman year. Northwest's teacher preparation programs focus on career readiness, equipping graduates for their initial teaching positions. Early observational requirements place students in actual classrooms for 30+ hours during their first two years, allowing them to shadow educators, understand classroom dynamics, and observe effective instructional techniques.
