As the inaugural program of its type in Missouri and the surrounding area, Northwest's Data Science degree offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with four specialization tracks: computer science, business, molecular biology, and geographic information systems.
The molecular biology concentration centers on bioinformatics, where laboratory science meets data analysis. Modern researchers employ diverse methods to study cells and their interactions, including genomics (sequencing entire genomes to identify gene functions), transcriptomics (examining gene activation patterns), metabolomics (tracking cellular metabolites), and proteomics (identifying protein presence). Professors emphasize instruction on data collection methods, analytical techniques, and interpretation processes.
