The Master of Arts in English program caters to students passionate about literature, linguistics, composition, and teaching English to non-native speakers. The curriculum offers six specialized concentrations, equipping learners with advanced expertise in language studies, linguistic analysis, effective communication, and writing, alongside a deeper literary comprehension. Track I mandates at least 30 graduate-level credit hours within the English Department, laying the foundation for doctoral studies. Participants in this track must successfully complete a foreign language competency test. Acceptable languages for demonstrating proficiency include French, German, Greek (classical or koine), Italian, Latin (classical or medieval), Russian, or Spanish, with potential approval for other languages by the graduate studies director based on academic necessity. With advisor consent and graduate studies director approval, students may incorporate limited coursework from disciplines closely aligned with English. This program track particularly benefits current English language arts educators and those pursuing secondary education certification in English language arts.
