NIU's media studies program provides a comprehensive selection of courses that blend critical analysis, theoretical frameworks, and practical production techniques for graduate students. The curriculum features specialized seminars exploring documentary filmmaking traditions, cinematic history and analysis, screenwriting for narratives, gender representation in visual media, digital communication platforms, and documentary production processes.

The Communication Studies MA program enables students to deepen their expertise and develop leadership capabilities across communication theory, media analysis, rhetorical criticism, and journalistic practice. Participants can concentrate on a single specialization or design a customized program integrating multiple disciplines. Graduate candidates may focus their studies in areas including interpersonal dynamics, organizational communication, persuasive strategies, rhetorical analysis, journalism, or media research within the communication studies framework.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt, Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum 2.75 overall gradepoint average (GPA), based on a 4.00 system, in their baccalaureate program or must have completed 15 or more semester hoursof graduate work at an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.20 or higher.
In addition to the application, the following materials need to be submitted to the Graduate School.

At least two letters of recommendation (letters from professors are preferred).
Transcripts.
Statement of Purpose.
GRE Scores: Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher should contact the graduate director to request a GRE waiver.
The TOEFL and the Test of Spoken English are required for international students.
