The computer science Ph.D. program equips students with specialized expertise to independently design and execute research initiatives across academic and professional settings. Our curriculum cultivates mastery of complex theoretical frameworks, hones methodological approaches for investigative work, and progressively enhances scholarly understanding. Prospective candidates for the computer science doctoral program must satisfy all Graduate School admission criteria, hold an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science or a closely aligned discipline, and possess foundational knowledge equivalent to Northern Illinois University's bachelor's degree standards.

Qualification Requirements

A program of study designed by the student and the adviser to meet the course requirements specified below must be approved by the Department of Computer Science. Each student must complete at least 90 semester hours of graduate course work. An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt. Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum undergraduate 2.75 overall GPA on a 4.00 system or a 3.20 GPA with 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution.
