The Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainable Food Systems equips students with essential knowledge for careers in sustainable agriculture and food production. This multidisciplinary program readies participants to tackle diverse challenges in eco-friendly farming. The curriculum includes two mandatory courses plus optional electives across three specialized tracks. These classes emphasize hands-on learning and real-world implementation. The program focuses on three key disciplines to develop systemic understanding: 1) Agricultural Sustainability - explores ecological systems affecting farming and regional food solutions, 2) Nutrition and Wellness - analyzes contemporary developments in food production, farming practices, and community health regarding sustainable nutrition, and 3) Sociocultural Perspectives - investigates necessary societal transformations for establishing sustainable food networks. Available to all NIU students (degree-seeking or otherwise), participants must uphold satisfactory academic progress. Certificate coursework may count toward Bachelor's degree requirements.
