This program provides a structured curriculum aimed at deepening students' understanding of ethical frameworks while building practical skills for applying ethical reasoning in both professional and personal contexts. The core course explores foundational ethical theories from Western philosophy, while elective options focus on discipline-specific ethical challenges across fields including business, engineering, healthcare, humanities, and social sciences.
The applied ethics undergraduate certificate is available to all NIU-enrolled students. Participants must maintain satisfactory academic progress, earn at least a C in all certificate-applicable courses, and finish all requirements within six years. All coursework must be completed through NIU. Note that some classes may have prerequisites outside the certificate program. We recommend taking PHIL 331 (Ethics) early in the program sequence. Prospective certificate candidates should consult with the applied ethics program coordinator during their initial planning stages.
