The Human Development and Family Studies program equips you to work with young children, infants, toddlers, and their families across home, school, and community environments through child development and early education coursework. This pathway prepares you for professional roles or advanced studies in fields like early childhood education, intervention programs, and leadership/advocacy positions. Program participants gain hands-on experience at NIU's renowned Child Development and Family Center during their practicum. The curriculum meets requirements for multiple Illinois Gateways certifications. As an HDFS major, you'll explore the dynamic relationship between family systems and human growth within cultural and societal frameworks. Multiple experiential learning opportunities allow you to translate academic concepts into practical applications. An HDFS degree opens doors to diverse career paths, with graduates securing positions across healthcare, social services, and other sectors serving children, adults, seniors, and family units.
