Chemistry forms the foundation of all scientific disciplines, playing a crucial role in understanding biology, geology, physics, and numerous specialized fields within them. Earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry opens doors to countless career opportunities in science. At NIU, chemistry majors can choose among four specialized tracks: Chemistry - Ideal for those aiming for graduate studies in chemistry or a career as a professional chemist. Biochemistry - Designed for students pursuing advanced degrees in biochemistry or professional chemistry careers. Secondary teaching - Prepares future educators to teach chemistry at middle and high school levels. Chemistry for pre-professionals - Tailored for students using chemistry as a stepping stone to professional programs like medical school. Both the Chemistry and Biochemistry tracks hold accreditation from the American Chemical Society (ACS).
