The curriculum provides an overview of all visual arts disciplines available at the School of Art and Design, guiding students toward selecting their undergraduate specialization. Drawing serves as a powerful medium for creative expression, visual storytelling, and communication across both traditional and digital formats. NIU's drawing curriculum supports skill development from fundamental object depiction to conceptual interpretation. Through rigorous studio work, you'll create portfolio pieces examining themes like narrative imagery, abstract concepts, social commentary, global perspectives, and identity exploration. Our program blends innovative digital techniques with conventional material practices, promoting modern artistic approaches. You'll be inspired to broaden your drawing techniques to encompass performance art, installations, video works, animated pieces, and photographic elements. Drawing program students receive dedicated faculty mentorship to deepen their understanding of artistic materials, techniques, and historical influences.
