Cognitive psychologists explore how our thought processes - or cognitions - function. Grasping cognitions is essential for researching subjects like memory, language, decision-making, problem-solving, attention, and perception. For many years, cognitive psychology has significantly influenced nearly every psychological discipline. Memory studies, for instance, connect to clinical psychology (PTSD development), developmental psychology (age-related memory changes), social psychology (how stereotypes are retained), and neuroscience (brain encoding of memories). This field also intersects with advertising, human-computer interaction, developmental studies, education, and political science. NIU's curriculum includes introductory courses, practical applications for enhancing critical thinking, and specialized topics within cognitive psychology.
