This focus area aims to bridge theoretical and applied discussions where justice and democracy intersect. Students choosing this concentration will examine democracy's essence, its philosophical foundations, institutional frameworks, behavioral patterns, and how legal systems interact with democratic principles and fairness. Core to this program's curriculum is investigating if, and when, democratic systems foster equitable outcomes for their citizens. The justice and democracy concentration enables students to explore these concepts through multiple political science disciplines, examining the relationship between fairness and democratic governance in legal systems, U.S. political structures, and philosophical traditions. While American democratic systems - including their historical evolution, governing bodies, civic participation, and ideological heritage - form a key reference point, the program maintains broader comparative perspectives.
