Journalism, which involves gathering and sharing news and information, plays a vital role in democratic societies. Professionals in this field work across various media platforms including print publications, digital outlets, radio, and television, while also contributing to advertising and public relations efforts.
The journalism program at NIU operates within the Communication Department. Through coursework in writing, visual storytelling, digital media, and broadcasting, students develop the ability to collect, analyze, and share information effectively. The curriculum also covers media ethics, industry standards, and the significant societal impact of mass communication. Journalism students benefit from a well-rounded liberal arts foundation complemented by specialized training. Our graduates achieve strong internship and employment outcomes thanks to our extensive alumni network (including about 5,000 journalism and PR professionals) and partnerships with groups like the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association.
