Environmental Studies aims to (1) analyze the scope and characteristics of environmental and climate shifts across local, regional, and worldwide levels, (2) investigate and develop responses to energy issues, and (3) evaluate how environmental, climate, and energy concerns affect communities while helping shape sustainable public policies. The accelerated six-year program culminates in either a B.A. or B.S. in Environmental Studies alongside a J.D. degree. Prospective students must declare their intent to the Environmental Studies department as majors focusing on environmental policy or nature in society who aim to pursue this accelerated track. Eligible undergraduates majoring in Environmental Studies with a concentration in either environmental policy or nature in society must complete at least 90 semester hours of coursework (fulfilling all general education and major requirements) while maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA to qualify for admission to NIU's College of Law under this program's special provisions. Applicants are advised to apply early in their junior year. As part of the law school application process, candidates must take the LSAT and achieve a score at or above the 50th percentile of the prior year's admitted law class. Admission is competitive, with selection influenced by the quantity and caliber of program applicants, general law school applicants, and other standard admissions criteria considered by the College of Law.
